As the follow-up to the Coordinating Committee of Business Interlocutors (CCBI), BASIS continues to represent business at the post-WSIS global meetings related to Internet governance, ICTs and the information society, safeguarding business interests in promoting commercial development and sharing business expertise with other stakeholders. These meetings include the Internet Governance Forum (IGF), the Global Alliance for ICT and Development (GAID), and the WSIS action lines and follow-up process within the UN System, including the Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD).
BASIS works with government, civil society, intergovernmental organizations and the public to ensure the necessary legal and policy frameworks are created so business can help to spread the benefits of the information society more widely across the world.
BASIS’ mission is to provide the following:
• Serve as the voice of world business on Internet governance and ICTs for development issues.
• Ensure future laws, regulations and policies are business-friendly, and make recommendations that will promote trade and investment.
• Advocate policy approaches that stimulate competition and foster innovation in the ICT sector.
• Safeguard the environment in which global business will continue to thrive as an innovator, consumer and producer of these technologies.
• Share experience with governments, civil society, academics and technical community representatives.
• Promote a people centric information society.
Through BASIS and EBITT, ICC coordinates and exchanges information with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). ICC also works with several UN agencies, including the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).In this role, ICC also functions as an important interlocutor for these agencies. Through ICC, these agencies are able to share their concerns with the global business community.
