ICC YAF Breakfast Briefing
February 2010

Ice rink preparation on Red Square

On 16 December 2009, despite the early hour and -25°C temperature outside, a warm and lively group of almost 50 lawyers gathered for the second ICC YAF event in Moscow. 80% of the participants were made up of younger practitioners of international and major local law firms; the remaining 20% were split between law academics and in-house counsels with international transactional and dispute backgrounds.

Ekaterina Kobrin of Baker & McKenzie Moscow (ICC YAF Regional Coordinating Committee, Europe) moderated the discussion. The panel included John Beechey, Chairman of the ICC Arbitration Court, and Timur Aitkulov, Dispute Resolution partner of Clifford Chance in Moscow. The speakers shared their views on a number of current problems in international arbitration. In particular, John Beechey spoke on behalf of the ICC Court to deliver his position on the present challenges – and changes – that the ICC is facing. Timur Aitkulov summarized recent jurisprudence of the Russian courts on arbitration-related matters.

Many questions followed. Judging from the questions submitted, the issues of arbitrators’ appointments and cross-border enforcement of awards and foreign court judgments were of most interest to the participants. Besides, the participants used the opportunity to ask the speakers more practical questions on rules and procedures of international arbitration.

The Moscow office of Clifford Chance hosted the breakfast briefing at its premises in the center of the city. The ICC YAF would like to thank Clifford Chance’s partners for the event and of course for the wonderful breakfast provided. Special thanks go to Elmira Noureeva of Clifford Chance who did all the organization & registration work.
