WSSD Preparatory Committee II
New York, 28 Jan - 8 Feb 2002

Prepcom II is one of four preparatory meetings hosted by the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD10) during the run up to World Summit on Sustainable Development. These meetings are intended to set an agenda that allows governments and other major players to join forces effectively in Johannesburg so as to confront the real challenges of sustainable development. Prepcom II also features a multi-stakeholder dialogue session, designed to gain the input of key non-governmental stakeholder groups.

Interventions during the multi-stakeholder dialogue

Jay Hair, Secretary General,
International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), London

    On behalf of business and industry groups, Jay Hair (International Council on Mining and Metals) stressed equity of opportunity of participation. He stated that Multi-Stakeholder Dialogues must be based on trust, patience and responsible corporate behaviour.

Miriam Lev-on, BP

    Miriam Lev-on underscored pioneering efforts to create management systems to encompass all aspects of sustainability. She also said five key areas had contributed to progress in sustainable development: innovation, investment, infrastructure, integrity, and involvement.

    Claude André Lachance said the Millennium Declaration is a good starting point for setting defined priorities given scare resources. He noted progress in the partnership agenda but more work needed to be done on ethics, workers' rights, globalization and other social aspects of sustainable development. He said business can improve economic prospects but government and infrastructure must be in place, a nd called for a common set of objectives to help developing countries.

Sir Mark Moody-Stuart meets Tom Goldtooth, Indigenous Environmental Network North America, participant in the Indigenous Peoples Caucus, during the Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue session which, for the first time in the history of the United Nations, took place in the General Assembly hall on Tuesday 29 January 2002.


Nitin Desai, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs and Secretary-General for the World Summit on Sustainable Development, gave his opening address to the PrepCom on Monday 28 January 2002.
