ICC promotes collaboration with governments at G8 environment ministers meeting
Paris, 23 May 2008

ICC’s letter provides building blocks for policymakers on how governments and business can work together to address climate change, biodiversity, and resource efficiency.

The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) has put forward a series of practical proposals to address environmental concerns through cooperative actions between governments and the private sector i n a letter to environment ministers attending the G8 environment ministers meeting, 24-26 May in Kobe, Japan.

As businesses continue to take effective action to address global environmental challenges, ICC’s letter provides building blocks for policymakers  on how governments and business can  work  together to address these concerns. The recommendations are focused on climate change, biodiversity, and resource efficiency_ three thematic areas the G8 ministers will discuss.

ICC Secretary General Guy Sebban said: “ There is no contradiction between economic growth, trade liberalization, environmental protection and sustainable development. While the current environmental challenges are difficult, they are also an opportunity for business along with governments and civil society partners to address environmental risks now and for future generations.”

“ICC stands ready to work with policymakers in G8 countries and all over the world to effectively address environmental risks while promoting growth, access to energy and sustainable development. ” he added.

As part of the celebration around the International Biodiversity Day on 22 May, ICC was an active participant at the ninth meeting of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity in Bonn from 19-30 May, providing recommendations, business expertise and examples of positive contributions from the business community through an exhibit, a side event and other activities.

ICC works closely with the G8 on a variety of topics and will submit a statement to the h eads of state and government attending the G8 Summit Hokkaido Toyako from 7-9 July on critical issues to world business including key environmental concerns.
