The ICC Commission on Financial Services and Insurance meets bi-annually in Spring and Autumn. The first meetings of 2008 will take place in Paris on 5 and 6 June at the ICC International Secretariat. The provisional agenda can be viewed below*.

ICC Financial Services & Insurance Commission to focus on financial turbulence

 

A group of top experts and international institutions are participating in this year’s 2008 Financial Services & Insurance Commission as financial turbulence is reached an unprecedented peak. The meeting is scheduled to be held at the ICC Headquarter in Paris on June 5-6.

 

Each year the Financial Services and Insurance (FSI) Commission of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) hosts business leaders, finance experts, insurers, and government officials at Commission meetings to promote business-to-business dialogue and recommend policies to enhance finance practices throughout the world. The Commission is chaired by Victor Chu, Chairman of First Eastern Investment Group, Mrs. Güler Manisali Darman (Principal GMD Global Advisors Ltd) and Mr. Charles P. Heeter (Managing Principal, Deloitte Touche, Global Public Policy, Chair of the Business and Industry Advisory Committee to the OECD).

 

Over the past years, the FSI Commission has been successful in terms of advancing corporate governance, finance and business interests various regions of the world. Past meetings, held in England, Turkey, and Czech Republic have attracted a widely attended audience (usually more than 100 delegates from more than 40 countries) and have been extremely successful in terms of advancing business interests in these regions.

 

The meeting of 5 June 2008 will consist of a roundtable on Corporate Governance entitled “Thinking Strategically about Governance & Financial Challenges”. The roundtable will comprise 4 sessions as follows: Session 1 - Corporate Governance as a Dispute Resolution Mechanism; Session 2 - Corporate Governance of Non-listed Companies in Emerging Markets; Session 3 - The Contractual Governance of Private Equity and Hedge Funds; Session 4 - Collaboration on Corporate Governance in the Midst of Recent Financial Challenges.

 

On 6 June, we will discuss how finance has been affected following the recent turmoil that was triggered by rising delinquencies in the US sub-prime mortgage market credit crunch. It will provide analysis on specific issues related to sovereign funds, credit rating process, valuation of complex securities, off-balance sheet vehicles… We will also discuss accounting norms and how they cope with the current financial innovations. The need for new regulations will also be addressed in a specific session. Featuring guest speakers from Europe, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and the US, these issues will be addressed from a truly global perspective.
